GRADUATION PLEDGE ALLIANCE (GPA)
The Graduation Pledge of Social and Environmental Responsibility states: "I pledge to explore and take into account the social and environmental consequences of any job I consider and will try to improve these aspects of any organizations for which I work."
Students define for themselves what it means to be socially and environmentally responsible. Students at over a hundred colleges and universities are using the pledge at some level. The schools involved incl…

IS YOUR INVESTMENT REALLY GOING TOWARD THE “GREATER GOOD”?
(You can help promote corporate responsibility even if you are not in the TIAA-CREF pension system)
Dear Professor/Staff Member,
It’s morning in America---do you know where your pension fund assets were last night?
Would it upset you to know that TIAA-CREF (TC) ---the nation’s largest retirement fund---is a major investor in companies like Wal-Mart, Nike, Costco, Coca-Cola, and Philip Morris/Altria? M…

For Campus Sustainability we had many students from all areas of campus come to see our display. Instead of Free popcorn we decided to go with a more environmentally friendly option. For our giveaway we had Apples donated to us by Leaman’s Apple Barn in Freeland, Mi. The apples really helped us draw in more students and spread awareness about Sustainability at Delta College. Next year we are hoping to reach more students to really get the message out there.

It's been an exhausting two days, and I mean that in the best way. It's the exhaustion you get from doing good work: critical thought, difficult questions, solvent solutions. After making the rounds of sessions, plenaries and discussions, I want to go straight to bed and wake up tomorrow full of plots to bring this issue more into the foreground. Because the more attention sustainability gets, the closer we get to answers to questions like these:
How can we surpass LEED to make our buildings an…

Here's some background on the issue of the "shadow campus," the topic of Dale McGirr's after-dinner speech. Historically, campus investments haven't done much to develop the towns surrounding them, which leads to shiny new university buildings surrounded by dilapidated historical districts. Less than 30% of students nationwide actually live on campus, which means that 70% live in the shadow campus, which most students will tell you is dingy, often unsafe, and sometimes resentful of student prese…

In a combined session on dining and food-related initiatives, we heard about architectural gardening, food sourcing and composting. Here's the breakdown:
Lacy Brittingham from Phase2 Architecture (AIA, LEED-AP)
Lacy started with the excellent point that food is a great way to reach people. After all, everybody eats! Considering that agriculture is the greatest nonpoint source of water pollution, and that with most foods, nutritional content seems to decrease as production grows, incorpor…

Bonny Bentzin and Arianne Peterson from ASU presented on the ability of campuses to act as labs for sustainability practices, particularly when it comes to students, who are active and tend to have higher levels of engagement than any other demographic group. Using student enthusiasm as a tool means that ASU, with a population of 80k, has enormous potential.
ASU is urban, with a population of 80k and four campuses. With more students than seats and an arid Arizona environment, Bonny makes the p…

Terry Tamminen, now chief policy adviser to the Governor of California, opened up the conference. His background is impressive, having founded the Santa Monica Baykeeper, as well as Waterkeeper programs in other CA cities. He's also served as director of the Environment Now Foundation and as secretary of the California Environmental Protection Agency.
Opening with the question, "For what will we remember this day?," Terry told stories of two epiphanies. The first is about his meeting with Verno…

I'm here at the Smart and Sustainable Campuses Conference at the University of Maryland, representing the National Wildlife Federation, and will be checking in all day to let you know what I'm learning! Efforts to "green" this conference include recycling, composting, FSC-printed programs, public transportation, and carbon offsetting.
Already I've had breakfast with campus members from Ohio, Kentucky, Minnesota, and Washington, and we've spent the hour discussing renewable energy policies at va…
